Taoyuan City, which is known as the gateway as well as one of the major industrial and commercial city of Taiwan, is home to Taoyuan International Airport. In addition to implementing Smart Services to create a “Smart airport”, the Taoyuan Aerotropolis Project also hopes to drive the overall industries in Taiwan forward into the next generation. The construction of the Taoyuan International Airport’s third terminal, future expansion of the third airplane runway, and the ongoing Taoyuan MRT system, for instances, will expand the capacity of passenger and cargo services. Moreover, industries, such as green energy, AI self-driving cars, ICT cloud, aviation, logistics, and biomedicine will also be introduced in the Taoyuan Aerotropolis to bring Taoyuan a whole new scale of possibilities in economy and technology. During the development process, substitute housing for local residents will also be built to protect their rights and interests in order to promote the coexistence and co-prosperity of the airport and the local communities.
On top of that, the Taoyuan Aerotropolis Project also aims to restore, revitalize, and reuse the cultural assets in the area. The cultural preservation and urban planning are going hand in hand. For example, Taoyuan City Government has designated an old naval base, located at the development area of Taoyuan Aerotropolis, as the municipal historical site. The old naval base was the only military base after China Civil War in Taiwan that had both aerial combat and recon and the base was also a historical evidence showing the traces of the US and the ROC (Taiwan)’s cooperation in the Cold War era. Hence, by declaring its position as the preserving historical site, not only is the former air force station saved during the construction of the Aerotropolis, but also the 13 years of history of the 35th squadron (known as the Black Cat squadron) could be restored and preserved, protecting the highlight of the ROC’s Air Force cultural assets.
